Head, Learning Support Unit

Learning Support Unit (LSU) caters for students and pupils with learning difficulties, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit and Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), Cerebral Palsy (CP), Down Syndrome (DS), Learning Disability (LD), Hearing Impairment (HI) etc. The department provides resources and instructional strategies that give students the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual support needed to learn.
The unit is equipped with CCTV systems and staffed with qualified and dedicated Special Education teachers.

The Learning Support Unit sub-sections include SPEECH THERAPY, BEHAVIORAL THERAPY, OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY, COGNITIVE, PHYSIOTHERAPY, VOCATIONAL SKILLS and SIGN LANGUAGE.

STAFF STRENGTH

The Unit is equipped with highly skilled and certified Special Education Needs (SEN) teachers and therapists who work assiduously to provide all its pupils/students with an appropriate and efficient education. The department is furnished with over 40 teachers/therapists and 74 pupils/students from pre-school to Premier Pre-University Program (PPUP). In addition, the LSU aims to enable the teaching staff to meet the specific learning needs of students, identify learning difficulties and access consultation and support.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The Learning Support Unit had series of activities ranging from Annual Genes for Jeans Day, Parents’ forum, to in- house weekly trainings for SEN teachers on how best they work and accommodate children with special needs in an inclusive environment.

WHO CAN ACCESS THE LEARNING SUPPORT SERVICES?

Pupils/students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit and Hyperactive Disorder, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Learning Difficulties/Disability (Dyscalculia, Dyslexia, Dysgraphia) Hearing Impairment etc. 2-day assessment is conducted to identify the specific area(s) of the child’s needs in other to prepare an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) which will suit and accommodate the learner’s ability.

RESOURCES MATERIALS

The Learning Support Unit has equally been equipped with trending assessment tools and instructional materials for children with special needs which are meant to address all their learning challenges and difficulties.

ACHIEVEMENTS

Most of our learners write both internal and external examination such as; BECE, ERC, Cambridge checkpoint, IGCSE, Senior WAEC and NECO with aid from the school scribes. Learners from the department have equally registered and participated in the annual Arts Explosion contest and numerous other exhibitions in which they performed excellently.
